Subject : Press Release

Hot Weather Safety Concerns especially regarding the elderly

The Hamilton Police and Fire Departments want everyone to be aware of the dangers that hot weather bring, especially to the elderly. Areas surrounding Marion County have already experienced heat advisories with temperature indices expected to approach 105 degrees. The dangers can be heightened when temperatures climb earlier in the day than usual.

During hot weather, make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Stay out of the sun and in the shade or in air conditioning when possible. Recognize the danger signs of heat related illnesses such as unusual fatigue, skin temperature, or conscious levels.

It is especially important to make frequent checks on and assist the elderly or those who are shut in doors. If someone is found to be suffering a heat related illness, keep the person calm and cool while you contact emergency services.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures combined with humidity is expected and that a situation will exist in which heat related illnesses or deaths are possible. People can stay aware of heat advisories by keeping alert to local news and weather broadcasts or by obtaining information from the National Weather Service on the internet at http://www.nws.gov
