FREE PANCAKES, MUSIC AND FUN IN FALKVILLE
Confederate Railroad Slated to Headline Annual Free Event
Decatur, Ala. – The town of Falkville rolls out the red carpet for a day of free music, fun and games each year in October welcoming visitors to the rural hamlet. The Falkville Fall Festival, sponsored by the Falkville Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Falkville, is set for October 29, 2011 and offers free pancakes, a car and tractor show, children’s activities, arts and crafts, and more culminating with country rock band Confederate Railroad live in concert. All activities take place in the town’s downtown area.
A free pancake breakfast at the Fire Department kicks things off at 7 a.m. where plenty of the fluffy hot cakes will be served until 11 a.m. Donations to the Fire Department will be accepted at the door. The car show and tractor show follow at 8 a.m. with arts and crafts vendors, bingo, inflatable fun for children, and food vendors set up throughout the day. The Fire Department will host a cake auction at noon where an assortment of yummy desserts will be up for grabs.
Music fills the air beginning at 11 a.m. with a 1 ½ hour performance by the Dusty Winsett Band followed by headliner Confederate Railroad taking to the stage at 1 p.m. The event wraps up around 3 p.m. Founded in 1984 in Marietta, Georgia, Confederate Railroad has released six albums with more than twenty singles earning a spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Hits include “She Took It Like A Man,” “Queen of Memphis,” “Trashy Women,” “Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind,” and “Elvis and Andy.” In 1993, they were awarded Best New Group at the Academy of Country Music Awards with a Grammy nomination and a host of nominations from the Country Music Association and the British Country Music Foundation soon following. For more information, visit www.confederaterailroad.net.
The town has more to celebrate in 2011. This year marks its 125th anniversary of incorporation as a city, and to celebrate a time capsule will be buried during the one day festival. For more information on the annual event, contact the Falkville Town Hall at 256.784.5922.

09/16/2011 Marion County Extension Meeting Announcement – “Putting Your Financial Recovery Puzzle Together”
ACES MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT…
Putting Your Financial Recovery Puzzle Together
Recent natural disasters have emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness. Everyone should have individual and family evacuation plans in place. Extensive planning should include all members of the family. Keep in mind that an emergency plan may be different for every family, yet there are common elements. Disasters, whether natural or man-made, usually strike quickly and without warning. You and your family may have little or no time to decide what to do next. That’s why it is so important to plan for the possibility of disaster and not wait until it happens.
The Marion County Cooperative Extension office is offering an Emergency Preparedness Program “Putting Your Financial Recovery Puzzle Together”. The program will be held on Tuesday September 20, 2011 at the E.T. Sims Neighborhood Facilities Building (Hamilton Recreation Center) in Room # 10 located at 371 7th Avenue SW, Hamilton, AL 35570. You will have two opportunities to attend. The first program will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. The same program will be repeated from
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
This program is for you whether you were directly impacted by the April 27th tornado or not. If you were impacted we will have information that will help you to reorganize your life. If you were not directly impacted we will give you the tools necessary to help your family create a plan in the event of an emergency.
Contact the Marion County Extension office to register at 205-921-3551 or wisselc@aces.edu

09/14/2011 ‘Web Cam 101 For Seniors’ Turns Oregon Seniors Into YouTube Celebrities
McMinnville, Oregon – With the adage that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks in mind, that just isn’t the case here. Well the attempt at learning a new thing has given these Oregon oldsters a small taste of internet fame. The video of them learning to use their new laptop has went viral! “I was trying to figure out how to do the videos and didn’t know the thing was actually running,” Esther told The Huffington Post. “All the while, Bruce was kind of amusing himself because he was bored. He was being quite an actor.”
09/14/2011 Auburn University’s mascot, “Spirit” is okay after incident at Jordan-Hare stadium!
Auburn, AL – The director of an Alabama raptor center says Auburn University’s eagle mascot, “Spirit”, is doing fine after crashing into a stadium luxury box window, Saturday, September 10th, in front of thousands of fans at Jordan-Hare stadium.
According to Jamie Bellah, director of AU’s Southeastern Raptor Center, told the Opelika-Auburn News* that he’s not sure why the bald eagle careened into the luxury box window. He said the routine for the pre-game flight, a ritual at home games, was very normal for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State.*
The eagle, “Spirit”, circled high above Jordan-Hare Stadium before colliding with the window, then continued it’s flight and descending to a handler on the field. Bellah said an exam and blood work completed later revealed no problems.
Golden Eagles, Tiger (War Eagle VI), Nova (War Eagle VII) and Bald Eagle, Spirit, are the eagles who have inspired football fans with their graceful flights over Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Spirit is the only Bald Eagle that has ever flown in Jordan-Hare Stadium. His first game flight was in 2001. You can recognize Spirit soaring before kickoff because unlike the Golden Eagles, Spirit has bright white head and tail feathers. In 1995, Spirit was discovered as a fledgling in Florida with wing and beak injuries.**

09/09/2011 Blast From the Past….or is it Future!
If you grew up in the 80’s then you probably know who Doc Brown and Marty Macfly is………We all remember those iconic movies from our youth! Well the people at Nike have brought a little of Back to the Future to life and no it’s not the hoverboard……..dangit I wish! Remember those imaginary supercool, self-lacing shoes worn by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future II”? But if you think you’ll be seeing them at your local Hibbett’s…….think again! And if you think they’ll be affordable that’s also not the case, seeing as the first pair sold on ebay for a whopping $37,500! Nike has created its own version of the shoes and is auctioning off 1,500 pairs of the special-edition sneaker on eBay. Proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Plus, the proceeds will be matched, effectively doubling the amount that will go toward Parkinson’s research. Check them out @ nikemag.ebay.com

08/19/2011 Alabama’s July Unemployment Rate is 10.0%
Alabama Department of Industrial Relations
News Release
For Immediate Release: August 19, 2011
Alabama’s July Unemployment Rate is 10.0%
Number of New Jobs and Job-Seekers Continue to Increase
MONTGOMERY- Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees announced today that Alabama’s July 2011 unemployment rate rose to 10.0%, up slightly from June’s rate of 9.9% and the 9.2% recorded a year ago. July’s rate represents 215,902 unemployed persons, compared to 213,886 last month and 194,194 in July 2010.
“While we are disappointed to report any increase in our seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, we are encouraged by the jobs coming into the state,” said Surtees. “There are significantly more Alabamians working in July than in January this year. In addition, we continue to see more discouraged workers resuming their job search, with more unemployed active job seekers in July. So while we have seen more jobs, we have also seen more job seekers as well,” he continued.
The counties with the lowest unemployment rates were: Shelby County at 7.0%, Coffee County at 7.7% and Pike County at 8.1%. The counties with the highest unemployment rates were: Wilcox County at 23.3%, Perry County at 20.5% and Dallas County at 19.9%.
