It’s always a pleasure for me to see so much highway work going along full speed as the good Lord has blessed us with great fall weather. I have enjoyed watching the leaves change and the coolness of the air. I still can’t get adjusted to the time changes and how it’s now dark before you get off work. However I am pleased to informed you that the Alabama Department of Transportation opened bids for a new highway project in our Legislative District on November 4th. This is a much needed project and one which I support fully. It is the resurfacing in Marion County of State Road 4 from State Road 171 ( US – 43 ) to County Road 45. This will make this road much safer and it’s greatly needed. You must rest assured that I will continue to fight to ensure we get every highway dollar and grant returned to our Senate District that we possibly can. We pay the taxes in we need to get the services back.
I want to encourage everyone to remember not only the soldiers in the 115th signal battalion which has been redeployed to Afghanistan but also the families that are left here at home. I appreciate the fine service of our brave men and women in the armed services of America. We are blessed with many patriots that serve both in the National Guard and the full time active military. I appreciate their sacrifices that enable us to live free here in America. However we must always remember that freedom is not free and men and women everyday have their life on the line in battle fields and hot zones all across this world. So when you see a veteran or an active service member tell them thank you and also remember them and their fine families in your prayers.
It’s certainly a pleasure to recently be re-elected to the Alabama Law Institute Executive Committee. As many of you know the Alabama Law institute is non partisan state agency that helps the legislature draft and model improvements in our laws. We are fortunate to have had the service of the Honorable Robert L. McCurley for the past 35 years who will be retiring this year. He and his find staff have done a great job on helping improve the quality of the laws that we consider and enact in the state of Alabama. I want to thank him for his many years of service. It’s important to understand that literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of time are donated by lawyers from all walks of life , big firms, small firms, plaintiffs, defense and business that donate their time to help us work through improvements in the laws.
I am very pleased to announce that the Alabama Department of Economic Affairs (ADECA) has granted funding for a couple of additional entities.
The Marion County Commission, which is chaired by Commissioner Mike Davis, received a $23,000.00 Violence Against Women Formula Grant. This grant will provide funding for a Family Violence Prevention Program in Marion County.
I’m also pleased to announce a $15,000.00 grant to Mr. John Mize of SAN, Inc, D\B\A Turning Point. This grant for Turning Point will proved services to victims of domestic violence and their children, sexual assault services to adult victims of rape and sexual assault and adult survivors of child sexual assault. Additional services are a 24 hour crisis line, an emergency confidential shelter, case management, court advocacy, child advocacy, information and referrals to other community agencies. Turning Point provides services to a six county area in West Alabama for domestic violence and a nine county area for sexual assault services. The counties served include: Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa.
I’m hopeful that these grants will help prevent rape and sexual violence, as well as provide good counseling for the victims and their family members. As always, thank you to the Mayors, Commissioners, and local officials, as well as the Governor, ADECA Director Jim Byard, and the members of the Legislature for your hard work in obtaining these funds that will improve the quality of life for the citizens of north Alabama.
This Thursday I had the honor of presenting several Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) grants to help start and continue projects in our area. Cherokee High School received a $4,000 grant from the Northwest Alabama RC&D and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to help start an outdoor classroom. They started by building a pavilion adjacent to the main campus to be used as an outdoor teaching area. This grant helped them take their first step in clearing a spot, purchasing the needed materials, and constructing the steel-framed structure in a small wooded area adjacent to campus. A special thanks to Dennis Deaton, a retired Agri-Science teacher, who took the lead on this wonderful project.
The Colbert County Commission received $5,000 to help make Colbert Alloys Park a place where families can come park their RVs and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds the Tennessee River. The grant was used to partly fund the purchase of a manufactured home for the park’s caretaker, which will also function as an office for the park once it is open.
The Covenant Christian School received a $4,000 grant from the Northwest Alabama RC&D and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to continue making strides in creating a fantastic outdoor classroom on their campus. This grant was used to purchase landscaping materials, plants, educational signs, benches, bird feeders, and an outdoor marker board to be used as teaching tools during outdoor lessons.
The Oka Kapassa Native American Festival, which is held annually at Spring Park in Tuscumbia, received a $10,000 grant. This partly funded the costs associated with the Native Americans’ performances throughout the festival, as well as their lodging while in Tuscumbia. This festival is widely considered to be one of the best in the Southeast, and boasts some of the most celebrated Native American artists, storytellers, and dancers in the country as its patrons. It is such an honor to host such an outstanding event.
In addition, several Lauderdale County libraries benefitted from a $17,825 grant to promote early literacy. The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library received the grant to fund early literacy training of local librarians at Florence, Killen, Lexington, and Rogersville libraries. The grant also helped these libraries to host parent workshops, conduct reading programs, and purchase books, CDs, and additional training materials used to teach early literacy to preschool aged children in Lauderdale County. I would like to give a special thanks to Roger Hayes, the Chairman, and the rest of the hard-working staff of the Northwest Alabama RC&D Council, for all of their hard work in helping better Northwest Alabama.

11/17/2011 New Tourism Video Highlights Decatur’s African-American Heritage
Decatur, Ala. – The Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCCVB) has released a new video featuring noteworthy African-Americans and their contributions to the city of Decatur in the areas of religion, education, employment, military, athletics, and political and social change. Named after the patriotic hymn penned by the Johnson brothers as part of the celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in 1900, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” chronicles the many stories and experiences of former slaves, quasi-free slaves, civic leaders, and educational visionaries from pre-Civil War days to today’s leaders who have made a difference with their voice and hard work.
Noted African-Americans can be traced back prior to the Civil War when area slaves paid for the construction of their own house of worship. Spanning over 180 years, the video highlights important milestones including the steps taken to an equal and quality education for all and the publishing of the town’s first African-American newspaper. It also documents the transition for African-Americans from a predominately agricultural workforce into skilled positions, as well as the many struggles which led to basic rights enjoyed by all today, such as freedom of religion, the right to a jury of one’s peers, and the right to vote.
“Our goal for the video is to educate our citizens and visitors on those African-Americans who paved the way for a better life for future generations to embrace and enjoy,” said Tami Reist, president of the Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It is important to document the city’s heritage and pay tribute to these inspiring leaders, yet our history is somewhat lacking as it relates to the role of African-Americans and their contributions. The video will play a key role in preserving the stories and experiences while showing how far we have come as a community.”
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was developed and produced by Freedom Light Productions of Decatur, Ala. and narrated by Wes Torain. Contributing to the video include Melinda Dunn of Decatur Parks and Recreation, John Allison of the Morgan County Archives, and local historians Rev. Wylheme H. Ragland, Peggy Allen Towns, and Phil Wirey.

11/16/2011 Catch the Holiday Spirit in Downtown Decatur “Monthly 3rd Friday Celebration Set For November 18th”
Decatur, Ala. – The merchants of historic downtown Decatur are ready to spread holiday cheer and invites everyone to join in as the holiday spirit fills the air with its monthly 3rd Friday celebration. Along with festive holiday music, gift ideas, holiday decorating tips, and hot cider, the evening includes visits with the jolly old man himself. Set for Friday, November 18th, the block party officially kicks off at 5 p.m.
There will be plenty of live entertainment, and various snacks and refreshments will be offered throughout the evening at many of the establishments. Briley Sandlin will be performing outside at Downtown Dawgs, Barb Carbon and Arrie Bozman will entertain the dinner crowd at Simp McGhee’s, and special acoustic Christmas music will be offered outside of Bank Street Antiques.
Bring your holiday shopping list; many of the merchants will remain open until 8 p.m. providing a variety of gift ideas from stocking stuffers to that hard to buy for person. Store specials, giveaways, and discounts will be offered at selected retailers and restaurants including Albany Framing, Bank Street Antiques, Cottage House, Downtown Dawgs, Glee Interiors, Memi’s, Ruggiere…A Gallery, Sam Frank & Moore, Tallulah’s, The Paper Chase, and Trish Land. Local photographer Brandie Hatfield will be snapping complimentary pictures with Santa at Divas, Doodlebugs and Debutantes. Set up outside of The Paper Chase, RE/MAX Platinum Alabama will have “Operation Christmas Cards for Our Troops” where anyone can sign Christmas cards to be mailed to members of the Armed Forces. The Carnegie Visual Arts Center will offer a $5 admission to its Friday@5 featuring Cutting Edge: Paper Art by Michael Liv with a receipt from any downtown merchant.

11/15/2011 Historic Decatur’s Annual Christmas Tradition Set for December 10th
Decatur, Ala. – The Albany and Old Decatur Historic Districts announce their annual Historic Decatur Christmas Tour where seven traditionally decorated homes and buildings complete with luminaries, fruit and greenery, and thousands of lights welcome visitors in celebration of the holiday season. The self-guided holiday tour provides a rare glimpse into private homes located in the city’s two historic districts sharing many untold stories and holiday decorating tips and also offers an evening of carriage rides, refreshments, and live holiday music. Always the second Saturday in December, this year’s event is scheduled for December 10th from 3 to 8 p.m.
Residences in the Albany and Old Decatur Historic Districts are not normally open for public viewing except when a select number of homes open their doors during the annual holiday tour. This year’s tour features five stunning homes, along with the Girl Scout Little House and a special event venue, The Columns of Decatur. Homes participating this year include the Henkel-Cox House, the Barrett-Faison House, the Edwards-Digges House, the Dancy-Polk House Inn, and the McEntire-Bennett House. The Dancy-Polk home and McEntire-Bennett home join the tour this year in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
Along with the tour of homes, neighborhood churches will open their doors for inspirational concerts and refreshments. The Brass Choir, Handbell Choir and other vocal and instrument ensembles of the First Baptist Church music ministry will perform, First Presbyterian Church will present “Jazzin’ the Season” featuring Trish Brown along with Keith Taylor, and First Presbyterian and Westminster Presbyterian Churches will feature Carillion Christmas Music. “A Collection of Nativities” will be on display at the First United Methodist Church Wesley Fellowship Hall and First Baptist Church will host a guided, narrated tour of the 111 year old Stephenson Chapel beautifully decorated for the holiday season.
Carriage rides will be offered beginning at 4 p.m. at the Carnegie Visual Arts Center or at Delano Park near the tennis courts. Cost for the carriage ride is $10 per person. Shuttle bus service will also be available from First United Methodist Church to the tour sites. Many merchants and restaurants throughout the downtown area will also be open during the tour.
Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased in advance at the Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Bank Street Antiques, Trish Land Designs, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, and Jimmy Smith Jewelers. On the day of the tour, tickets can also be purchased at Trish Land Designs, Bank Street Antiques, Jimmy Smith Jewelers, and the Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the Old State Bank, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, and First United Methodist Church from 3 to 7 p.m. For groups of ten or more, tickets are $10 each and must be purchased in advance at the Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Proceeds from the tour are used for neighborhood improvements such as tree replenishment and neighborhood public parks restoration.
Combined, the Old Decatur and Albany Historic Districts represent one of the finest and largest collections of Victorian and earlier 20th century craftsman and bungalow homes in Alabama. The homes date back, in some instances, to the early 1800s, while most were constructed around the turn of the 20th century.

11/15/2011 Rick and Bubba Turkey Toss Rescheduled for Thursday, November 17th
Decatur, Ala. – Due to inclement weather predicted for Wednesday, the Rick and Bubba Turkey Toss has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 17th. The event will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. at Academy Sport + Outdoors in Decatur, and along with flying turkeys, reality stars from “Rocket City Rednecks” will make a special guest appearance bringing with them their own hand-made contraption to launch a turkey into the air.
National Geographic Channel’s latest reality series “Rocket City Rednecks” features self-proclaimed rednecks from Morgan and Madison counties. Each episode shows how they combine redneck ingenuity with engineering and physics to solve real-world problems. Travis Taylor, Charles “Daddy” Taylor, Michael “The Kid” Taylor, “Pistol Pete” Erbach, and Rog “The Sidekick” Jones will be in Decatur where they will launch a frozen turkey using the trebuchet they built for the “Hillbilly Armageddon New” episode that aired on October 5, 2011.
Academy Sport + Outdoors located in Decatur was chosen by the general public to host the 2011 Rick and Bubba Turkey Toss from an online voting contest on the Rick and Bubba website in early October. The annual competition serves as a fundraiser for a local charity while determining who can throw a frozen turkey the farthest where $5K in Academy Sport + Outdoors gift cards are up for grabs. The nationally syndicated radio hosts of the Rick and Bubba Show will broadcast live providing a play by play action of the competition to their listeners from 6 to 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Academy Sports + Outdoors.
One by one, contestants line up to see who can throw the frozen turkey the greatest distance. While the wildly popular contest determines who can throw the farthest, it also raises money and food for a local charity. Those interested in participating must donate a non-perishable food item or cash. Neighborhood Christian Center of Alabama will be on hand to accept donations.
The 2010 event took place in Montgomery where the winner in the male division threw a distance of 121 feet with the female winner taking honors at 76 feet. Divisions include men’s, women’s, military, kids (12 and under), and high heels (women only). Prizes, totaling $5K in Academy Sport + Outdoors gift cards, will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each division.

11/10/2011 Annual Parade of Lights Set for Saturday, December 10th
Annual Parade of Lights Set for Saturday, December 10th
Decorated boats will be on display beginning at 4 p.m.
Decatur, Ala. – Sponsored by the Riverwalk Yacht Club and Extreme Marine, the annual Parade of Lights will take to the waterway, illuminating Decatur’s Wheeler Lake, on Saturday, December 10, 2011. The free holiday maritime event features approximately 20 boats of all types and sizes decorated with lights, holiday themes, and other festive trimmings for the holiday season. New for this year, the public is invited for a leisurely stroll around the docks for an up close look at the brightly lit boats prior to the parade.
Beginning at 4 p.m., the docks at Riverwalk Marina open allowing the public for the first time to admire the boats and their holiday decorations before they set sail. In addition, the Morgan County Humane Society will be on-hand with various animals available for adoption. With Christmas just around the corner, a new pet would be a wonderful present for someone. The Morgan County Humane Society will also be accepting donations of pet food, supplies, and cash.
At 6 p.m. the boat parade will take its usual route, making a circle from the entrance of Riverwalk Marina located on Highway 20, west to the Railroad Bridge, east in front of Rhodes Ferry Park and then back into the Marina. The best viewing will be at Rhodes Ferry Park, the Hard Dock Café or the Marina entrance.
