     You will have to get up early in the morning to observe the Winter Solstice, 5:12 a.m. CST, exactly!  This year, 2012, the Winter Solstice will occur on Friday, December 21st, 2012 at 5:12 a.m. CST (Central Standard Time).  The first day of winter, also known as the winter solstice, is the shortest day of the year.  It is the day when the sun reaches its most southern point in the sky.   After this date, the days start getting longer.
