Decatur, Ala. – Show organizers of the World Celebration Racking Horse Show are expecting an increase in entries and attendance for the annual event set for September 20-28, 2013. Considered the largest Racking Horse Show in the United States, the World Celebration offers over 180 classes for children, adults, amateurs, and professionals culminating with the naming of a new World Grand Champion.

The 2013 event marks its 42nd year, with the show experiencing growth in recent years in the number of entries received. According to Show Organizer Melisa Taylor, the number of stalls rented and the number of classes offered have increased in recent years. In 2012, 565 stalls were rented and approximately 170 classes were offered. To date, 654 stalls of the available 754 have been rented and this year’s show will offer 188 classes.

Along with a horse competition, this year’s show will also provide educational opportunities for local students. At 10 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 123 fourth grade students from Cotaco and Falkville Elementary will visit the Celebration Arena where there will be information sessions, demonstrations, hayrides, and other activities for their participation. The Alabama Legislature proclaimed the racking horse as the “Official State Horse for the State of Alabama” on October 5, 1975. “During the fourth grade, students are learning about the state of Alabama and it seemed to be an appropriate time to introduce them to the official state horse,” said Taylor.

The annual World Celebration offers a variety of activities, including a horse sale, a barn decorating contest, nightly consignment sales, and a golf tournament in addition to the horse competition. The general public is invited to participate in the Pleasure Association’s 50/50 raffle and the “When Pigs Fly” contest. Each night of the show, participants can attempt to fly a pig toward a target with the closest one winning a cash prize. On Saturday night prior to announcing the World Grand Champion, children are invited to participate in the “Stick Horse” class. This event allows children to bring their own stick horse for friendly competition in the arena. The nine-day competition culminates with the announcement of the new World Grand Champion.

Show organizers extend an invitation to the general public to come and experience the excitement of crowning a new grand champion. Shows are held nightly at 6 p.m. except on Thursday when show time begins at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person September 20 through 25 and $7 per person for the remaining nights of the competition. Parking is $5/daily. The Morgan County Celebration Arena is located at 67 Horse Center Road (off Highway 67 East) in Decatur.
