11/05/2013 – SAD NEWS – Lawrence County’s Signature Spring Event Comes to an End

Lawrence County’s Signature Spring Event Comes to an End

Moulton, Alabama (November 4, 2013) – The Board of Directors of the Lawrence County Arts Council announces the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival (ACEF) has come to an end after a nine year run. The idea of the festival hatched under Event Chairwoman Kathy Graham in 2004 when she was the president of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and Vicki Morese was the Executive Director of the Chamber. The first festival in 2005 attracted approximately 12,000 people and quickly became a much-loved tradition for many with nearly 20,000 in attendance at the 2013 event. “It has become increasingly difficult to coordinate and plan the event to a professional level expected from our patrons. We have outgrown our volunteer, logistic and financial resources,” stated Morese.

In nine years, the ACEF has evolved as one of the top events in the southeastern United States. The Southeast Tourism Society named it a Top 20 Events for April 2013. Founded in 1983, the Southeast Tourism Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism to its 12 member states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

In 2011, the Alabama Tourism Department named the festival as one of 50 must-see music festivals, and in 2012, it caught the attention of state tourism leaders again and was named one of 25 top food events. The Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association named ACEF Event Coordinator Vicki Morese Tourism Professional of the Year in 2007 and she received the Citizen of the Year award in 2011 from the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.

“We are happy in what we have accomplished in just nine short years. From seeing families spend quality time together to introducing arts to the students of Lawrence County, the ACEF has had a positive impact on the Moulton community,” said Morese. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, and the community for supporting the festival over the past nine years.”

Proceeds from the ACEF benefit the Lawrence County Arts Council (LCAC), an organization dedicated to providing the communities of Lawrence County with a broad range of visual, literary, and performing arts and cultural experiences.

Since inception of the festival, the LCAC has conducted in-school art education programs in Lawrence County schools by bringing musicians, theater, and art programs to students at no cost to educators or students in the week leading up to the ACEF. Festival organizers have also arranged for Master classes in blues guitar and music for students and have provided workshops on puppetry and their use in lesson plans to teachers. Past programs include a music education assembly by the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a young African-American string band who has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered;” “Riverboat John” Ferguson, a “True American Minstrel and Folk Lore Storyteller;” Wood and Strings Puppet Theatre, a professional, national touring company featuring extraordinary use of puppetry styles from around the world; “Mrs. Kate” Carpenter, folksinger, songwriter, and storyteller from Callahan, Florida; and Pied Piper of Percussion Steve Gryb of Miami, Florida. Each of these entertainers also performed during the ACEF for the entire community to enjoy.

In August, the LCAC presented $20,000 to the Lawrence County School System for the creation of an after-school fine arts program for high school students in Lawrence County beginning with the 2013-14 school year. The Lawrence Extended Arts Program, or LEAP, launched in August offering guitar, drama, and graphic design classes. According to Morese, the Lawrence County Arts Council will continue to function and will continue to raise money and write grants for art programs in Lawrence County schools. “We will continue to partner with Superintendent Grimes in the LEAP program and coordination of the Agricultural Career Day and assist in funding the program as long as we have the resources,” stated Morese.

For more information on the ACEF or the Lawrence County Arts Council, contact Morese at 256.905.0700.

05/20/2013 – Governor Bentley Statement Following Oklahoma Tornado

leave a comment »

May 20, 2013

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley issued a statement following the deadly tornado that struck Oklahoma on Monday afternoon.

“Dianne and I are offering prayers of support for everyone in Oklahoma. The people of Alabama can identify first-hand with those who have suffered such a devastating loss. We understand how painful it is to lose friends, neighbors and loved ones. We understand the challenges of a massive recovery and rebuilding effort. We will stand with the people of Oklahoma in the coming days, weeks, months and years.

“My office has been in direct contact with Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin’s office, and we are offering whatever assistance Alabama can provide. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency is prepared to coordinate any and all resources that may be requested by Oklahoma.

“Following the April 2011 tornadoes, people from other states showed tremendous compassion to Alabama. They helped us in our own rebuilding. They volunteered their time and their resources. They stood with us in prayer and support. Alabama stands ready to do the same for the people of Oklahoma.”

04/25/2013 – FT. PAYNE, AL – Homer Hickam, Author of “ROCKET BOYS” to Visit Fort Payne

leave a comment »

Fort Payne, AL – May 10th, 2013 – Homer Hickam to speak at Fort Payne High School, Lookout 2013 event celebrating Lookout Mountain region’s potential –

In conjunction with the presentation of the Lookout Alabama SELTI Writing Contest award, New York Times bestselling author Homer Hickam will make appearances at three locations in the Lookout Mountain area on May 10.

Hickam, who is best known for his memoir “Rocket Boys” that was made into a major motion picture starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Hickam, will speak at Fort Payne High School in the early afternoon before holding a public book signing at The Book Shelf from 3 to 4 p.m.

“We are very excited to have Homer Hickam visit our area and especially to have him speak to students at Fort Payne High School,” said Lookout Alabama Publisher Randy Grider. “His story is an inspiration to everyone. He grew up in a small town that relied on one industry as the backbone of the economy. He understands the challenges Fort Payne has faced with the decline of the hosiery mills.”

Following the afternoon events, Hickam will attend Lookout 2013, a dinner event at Cook Castle that will celebrate the Lookout Mountain region’s rich heritage, natural beauty and growing economic potential. The event is sponsored by Kamama, GH Metal Solutions, the Cancer Care Center of DeKalb, Mentone Realty and Pioneer Bridges and presented by Lookout Alabama magazine.

Hickam is scheduled to give a brief speech at Lookout 2013, which will also feature local tourism and economic development officials, business leaders and government officials, before a keynote address by University of Alabama Center for Economic Development Director Nisa Miranda.

Hickam was one of the judges for the writing contest, sponsored by Lookout Alabama, the Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative, DeKalb Tourism and Greater Gadsden Area Tourism. The goal of the writing contest is to promote tourism through fictional short stories featuring real places. Alabama Sen. Clay Scofield, chair of the state Tourism and Marketing Committee, will present the winner of the contest, which featured stories set in the Lookout Mountain area, with a check for $500 from the Alabama Department of Tourism.

About the Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative:

SELTI is an organization that promotes tourism through literature. It offers readers short stories, poetry and book excerpts – along with companion travel guides – about real places to visit. Founder Patrick Miller’s suspense novel, “Blind Fate,” was the first in the nation to include an online tourism guide embedded in the novel with tourism links to all the real places. SELTI followed up “Blind Fate” with “This Side of Paradise: Interactive Tourism Edition,” a new version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1920 debut novel that now includes tourism links to the real settings in the story. The royalties for the Fitzgerald edition are being donated by SELTI to the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum in Montgomery, Ala., located in the Fitzgeralds’ only surviving family residence.

About Homer Hickam:

Homer Hickam is best known for his award-winning and New York Times best-selling memoir “Rocket Boys,” which was made into the movie “October Sky.” But he is also a prolific author of 14 other fiction and non-fiction books, including his popular “Josh Thurlow” World War II series and his latest, a novel titled “Crater” set on the moon in the 22nd century. May 3-4, 2013 – Tuscumbia, AL The drumbeat of war is silent but the echo of the Civil War still fills the valley
below LaGrange Mountain, on the pinnacle of which stood a college and a village, burned 150 years ago by Federal troops. A sizeable settlement of houses was also burned on this fateful night.

To observe the sesquicentennial anniversary of the burning, the LaGrange Living Historical Association will hold “Recall LaGrange” on May 3-4, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., each day, announced Susann Hamlin, Executive Director of the Colbert County Tourism & Convention Bureau.

“Organizers are hard at work planning the most exciting and comprehensive ‘Recall LaGrange’ since the group began presenting it 25 years ago in 1988, Hamlin said. “It continues to grow and to draw many local residents, as well as Civil War buffs and history-lovers from all across North Alabama, southern Tennessee and eastern Mississippi. It was named a Top 10 Event for May, 2013, in the Alabama State Vacation Guide.”

“LaGrange College was known as ‘The West Point of the South’, and the poignant story of its existence and of the people who had homes on the mountain is one that deserves to be told and experienced,” added Hamlin, “and this year’s Recall LaGrange, a Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration, will indeed be an event to experience.”

The featured presentation in the afternoon on Saturday, May 4, will be the “Burning of LaGrange” by the 27th Alabama Infantry Regiment Re-enactors who will don Federal uniforms to portray Col. Florence Cornyn’s Federal Calvary unit, known as “The Destroying Angels.” Plans are for the troops to gallop on horseback, raid, pillage and engulf the mountain with smoke and flames, as they burn a mock smoke house and college.

Events scheduled to take place on Friday, May 3, will be geared toward students, said L.C. Lenz, president of the LaGrange Living Historical Association, and classroom and home school teachers are invited to bring field trips on that day. Re-enactor and living history presentations will be on the schedule. Call 256-446-9324 to arrange to bring a group.

Events on Saturday, May 4, will cater to attendance by the general public, and will include Civil War era living history demonstrations and frontier life skills such as bee keeping, blacksmithing, and period cooking, plus demonstrations of handicrafts, such as spinning, weaving, and quilting, leather working, and toy-making. There will be period music performed and much more. A first-person cemetery drama will bring to life the people who lived at LaGrange beginning in the early 1800’s. Re-enactors will show camp life during the Civil War. Participants include the Providence Living History Re-enactors, as well as the 27th Alabama Regiment Re-enactors, plus a large group of volunteer individuals. Tim Kent, local author of several books on Civil War history, will be a featured speaker.

LaGrange College Site Park is located off Hwy. 157 near Whiteoak and Leighton, about 5 miles east of Muscle Shoals. A sign and a restored log house set at roadside mark the turn. Designated parking will be available with shuttle service to major sites. Food vendors will be on hand.

The event is free, but donations are welcomed by the association so that the on-going work at the LaGrange College Site Park may continue. The group has re-assembled a collection of historic log buildings, which reflect life during the pioneer period at LaGrange. Within the complex one may visit the “dogtrot” Welcome Center/Museum, shop in a log “Country Store”, view an old barn, smoke house and corn crib, and peek into an old-time barber shop. The Bonner House Bed and Breakfast offers overnight accommodations and a log chapel completes the setting. Nearby LaGrange Cemetery offers a glimpse of the people who once resided at LaGrange or in the valley nearby. The obelisk that marks the grave of Abraham Ricks, a prominent plantation owner, stands vigil in this peaceful resting place. All of this is lovingly cared for by the LaGrange Living Historical Association.

It is said best by Louise Lenz, a dedicated volunteer who was instrumental in the formation of the LaGrange Living Historical Association in 1988, “This is a worthwhile life’s work, to preserve and protect our history at LaGrange and to tell its story. We cherish the opportunity and we invite everyone to come see what it is all about.”
