Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival Seeks Entries for Juried Rooster Art Show

Moulton, Alabama – The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival calls all artists to submit pieces for a juried art exhibition on the theme of roosters. Sponsored by Dr. Don Beach and hosted by the Lawrence County Arts Council, “Rooster Call” is held in conjunction with the ninth annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival set for April 12-14, 2013 in Moulton. Entry deadline is March 13.

The jury panel will select one Best of Show artist, a second place, and a third place. The Best of Show recipient wins a $500 cash prize, a listing in the Rooster Hall of Fame, and the opportunity for the work to be featured in future promotions. Second place and third place will be awarded $300 and $200, respectively. The winning submission will be determined by creative vision, innovation, potential to engage an audience, and overall impression. All artistic mediums will be accepted, and along with roosters, artwork on the theme of hens, chicks and eggs are encouraged.

All artwork accepted will be on exhibit for public viewing at Art Inspirations of the Valley located at 552 Lawrence Street in Moulton from April 16 to June 30, 2013, after being presented at the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival on April 12-14, 2013.

The exhibition is open to all emerging and established artists 18 years of age or older residing in the United States. All entries shall be original work produced by the artist within the past two years and may be marketed for sale at prices determined by the artist. The Lawrence County Arts Council will retain a 30% commission fee on any sale of art from the exhibition.

The jurors are Belinda McCullough Elliot and Elliot Knight. Elliot graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in interior design. She has worked in sales and design and as a business owner for seven years, all while having a lifelong passion for art and painting. Her mother is an artist, and while their styles are very different, she is Elliot’s inspiration and driving force to paint. Elliot’s work features plenty of texture, depth, and layers where each stroke has a purpose to draw the viewer inside the painting. She paints in her home studio in Moulton, Alabama.

Knight is the Visual Arts Program Manager for the Alabama State Council on the Arts. An Opelika native, he is an accomplished photographer, community arts leader, respected scholar and instructor, and is a graduate of the University of Alabama with BA and MA degrees with concentrated areas of study in the arts. He is the founder and co-director of the nationally recognized Black Belt 100 Lenses Program, a community-based arts program that works with high school students in twelve Alabama Black Belt counties. Previous employments and professional activities include an instructor in the University of Alabama’s Department of Art and Art History, a guest scholar and lecturer for the Alabama Humanities Foundation, an advisory board member for the Beauty Amid Destruction Project and Alabama Art Kitchen, and a Fellow with the Publicly Active Graduate Education (PAGE) program.

Entry fee for up to two submissions is $25 and each additional entry is $5. The deadline for entries is March 13, 2013 and those selected will be notified beginning March 15. Shipped artwork is due April 1 and hand-delivered art is due April 5.

Artists interested in entering can visit http://www.alabamachickenandeggfestival.com and click on “Juried Rooster Art Show” in the Contests section for a prospectus and an entry form, or call 256.905.0700.

Artists renting vendor space are ineligible for the juried exhibition and will have an opportunity to win prizes and recognition through an open arts and crafts competition. Arts and crafts vendors interested in exhibiting can go to http://www.alabamachickenandeggfestival.com and click on “Vendors” for more information and to download an application.

Lockheed Martin and UAHuntsville to Sponsor Egg Drop Competition
Middle school and high school students compete for a $500 cash prize.

Moulton, Alabama – The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival is seeking entries for its “Egg Drop for Future Engineers” competition where a cash prize of $500 is on the line. Lockheed Martin is partnering with the UAHuntsville College of Engineering in sponsoring the contest scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013 during the ninth annual event.

The competition tests students’ skills in building the best contraption to catch a falling egg without it breaking allowing them to experience hands-on engineering challenges through a team approach. The contest is open to both middle and high school students and the winning teams in both divisions receive $500. Teams will be given 30 minutes to construct a device with materials supplied on-site that will cushion the egg. The egg must survive drops from four selected heights, each higher than the previous one.

An application is available for downloading at http://www.alabamachickenandeggfestival.com. Registration is free but those wishing to participant must pre-register by March 31, 2013.

01/25/2013 – Proclamation from Mayor Williams – From the Clyde Nix Public Library

leave a comment »

Hamilton’s Clyde Nix Public Library board members and the library staff held a reception for Hamilton’s Mayor Wade Williams and City Council members Friday evening, January 25th, 2013, at the Clyde Nix Public Library in Hamilton, Alabama.

Punch and snacks were served.  A program was presented by librarians, Starr Montgomery and Mary Franks, to the Mayor and Council to inform them on the various kinds of services provided by the library.  A proclamation was signed by Mayor Williams proclaiming February as Library Lovers Month.

Love-Libraries-libraries-a

DID YOU KNOW?

Last year, 14,731 people came through our doors

324 people signed up for a new library card

We had 3,974 patrons use our public computers

12,590 items were checked out

Your library is the place to make copies, scan documents, make print outs and even send or receive faxes

If you are in need of a meeting room, we have that too!

When you need wireless access, we offer Wi-Fi any time the library is open, and it’s free!

Want a book we don’t have?  Tell us and we’ll get it from another library free of charge

Are you an e-book reader?  We have those too

Need a proctor for a test?  Yep, it’s another service we offer

Curious about your family history?  We have newspapers and genealogy records

“Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money

will get you through times of no libraries.”

Report for January 18th, 2013

One of the best programs for paving roads and streets in the counties and cities is the new ATRIP program also formally known as the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation Improvement Program.  ATRIP will allow each county to invest up to 10 million dollars including a local 20% match in much needed bridge maintenance.  The funds will be shared between all cities towns and unincorporated areas in each county as a percentage based on the 2010 census.  Many of our towns and cities have already agreed to move forward on the ATRIP program and I think it will help create jobs and make our roads safer for our citizens to travel on.  I am pleased to be supporting this program as I think it will make a great improvement in the overall quality of life here in our local area and throughout Alabama.

As the year came to a conclusion Governor Bentley was kind enough to help us with many important needs from the tornado and storm damage that still remains.  I was pleased to support and fight for these grants as I think they are very much needed and will help our area.  As you may know the Franklin County Commission will receive $125,000 the City of Hackleburg will receive $4,788,921.  The Marion County Commission will also receive $300,000 along with Moulton receiving $375,000.  The City of Phil Campbell will receive $2,450,000.  This will enable our communities to build back in a better and safer environment.  As I said after the storms tore through our Senate District in April of 2011, it would e a marathon and not a sprint to get rebuilt and back on track.  However, these grants will help our local officials and communities to accomplish those goals as well as create new jobs in our area through the construction and rebuilding.

As you know each one of the TVA counties receives TVA in lieu of tax monies.  These funds originally were distributed throughout the State of Alabama.  However some years ago the Legislators  of the TVA counties came together both the Democrats and the Republicans and captured that money which was going state wide to be brought back home and to be distributed through grants within each county.  In our Senate District that includes Lawrence, Franklin and Colbert counties.  I’m pleased to report to you that Representative Johnny Mack Morrow and I have been able to return $478,869.77 through the year ending 2012, helping all our schools and communities throughout Franklin County.  You may rest assured that I will continue to fight to see that our tax dollars come back home to help us in a positive way.

We received some really good news for the Town of Littleville this past week.  They were approved for a $200,000 ADECA Grant which will be matched with $63,000 of the city’s money to assist with the construction of an access road, drainage, and site work to facilitate the location of the Big Star grocery store that is coming to Littleville.   This business will be the first modern supermarket to ever be in Littleville.   Mayor Copeland and the City Council have been working tirelessly to locate that industry here and I was proud to support the grant.  It will create approximately 21 new jobs and increase the tax base for the town.  As you can imagine when they were the first town to go wet e.i , selling beer and liquor legally, they received a great portion of tax returns from people that lived outside of their city and county.  With other cities in adjoining counties voting to go wet, it caused a dramatic decrease in sales revenue taxation for the City of Littleville.  I congratulate them on accomplishing this grant and I was proud to be a big supporter.

I am pleased to inform you that the Alabama Department of Youth Services has awarded diversions grant funding for the implementation of several community-based programs that will benefit the youth in our district.   This new, competitive and accountability based process, is the result of a comprehensive strategic planning effort by DYS to increase the ability of local jurisdictions to provide better services.  As you know I have been a champion in providing a more effective and less costly diversion services to at risk youth.  We are showing the DYS financial support provided to our juvenile detention centers where they can be more effective in providing services.  This not only helps DYS fulfill its goals and objectives but also provides vital resources here at home to help our youth rather than send them off to detention centers throughout the state.  I am proud to announce to you that H.O.P.E Center will receive $100,000, Colbert-Lauderdale Attention Home, Inc will receive $121,000, Mitnick Wilderness Program will receive $320,000 and the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Facility will receive $183,718.  You may rest assure that I will continue to fight to bring our tax dollars here at home.

Thank you for all the phone calls, letters and e-mails about your concerns dealing with the issues facing us at the State and local level.  Please continue to contact me at the following address.
