Good friends, good stories, and good music, what a wonderful combination!

I went to the Pastime Theater in Winfield, Alabama tonight (Saturday, April 12th, 2014) with my friend Shelia to see Bobby Horton’s “Homespun Songs of the Civil War”.

I went, expecting familiar tunes and familiar stories about the War Between the States aka the Civil War. I was surprised to hear a different view by the composer, multi-instrumentalist, and entertainer, Bobby Horton.

He told a story I’d never heard told before and sang songs, some of which had familiar melodies, but most were unknown to me.

He was dressed in a period suit with a long coat and bow tie. He had some unfamiliar instruments which he played with such feeling and expertise. There was of course, a Banjo, then an old style flattop guitar or two, a Harmonica, a Flute Recorder and an instrument I first thought to be a Mandolin but it sounded like a guitar. He played and sang songs in the old style, like the men would do around the camp fire. The words to most were unfamiliar and told of young men leaving home to go to war to defend their homes and their way of life and songs that the women sang when sending their fathers, husbands, and sons off to fight that terrible bloody war.

It was a very moving performance! And the sound in the Pastime Theatre is great! The ambiance is something you just have to experience for yourself! It’s like taking a step back in time to enter the beautiful Pastime Theater Auditorium.

The bathroom facilities also are accessible and spacious. There are popcorn and cold drinks available for purchase as well.

The whole experience was such a treat! And Ms. Mary Hyche was the wonderful hostess and ‘Master (or Mistress) of Ceremonies’ who gave an eloquent introduction to the talented performer, Bobby Horton.

By the way, you might want to catch a performance by Bobby Horton soon, in May I think, at Fayette, Alabama. I’ll be sure to remind you before the event takes place.
